Instructional Design for Editors

A continental breakfast and afternoon refreshments are provided. There will be a 90-minute lunch break. Lunch is not provided.

The Workshop

Adding knowledge of instructional design to our repertoires gives editors and writers versatility and greater employability in the exciting field of online delivery of educational materials.

Among the topics covered in this workshop will be the following:

  • an overview of course development and online course delivery, e-learning, web-based instruction
  • a basic instructional design model (ADDIE = analyze, design, develop, implement and evaluate)
  • editing skills and instructional design—where does the editor come in?
  • a brief introduction to learning theories and instructional events
  • learner attributes and their effects on learning
  • characteristics and functions of good learning objectives
  • what the editor needs to know about learning objectives
  • the editor's role in ensuring the best expression of learning objectives
  • content organization and sequencing
  • congruency among objectives, learning strategies and evaluation methods
  • a refresher on writing style and readability
  • the role of new media in instructional design and what an editor needs to know about educational technology

The Facilitator

Clayton R. Wright is a world leader in the field of instructional design. He has expertise in curriculum development, instructional design, educational technology, distance education and professional development in Canadian and international settings. He has secondary and post-secondary teaching and administrative experience in Quebec, Ontario and Alberta, has taught media courses at the University of Alberta and has led the Instructional Media and Design team at Grant MacEwan College. Recently, he assisted with the development of courses and quality assurance systems by working with faculty at institutions such as the Botswana Ministry of Education, the National Institute for Open Schooling in India, the National Open University of Nigeria, the Wawasan Open University in Malaysia, and he assisted the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. Thus, he brings an international perspective to our conference, "Editing in the Global Village." Dr. Wright's publications have appeared in refereed journals. He often works with editors and values their skills and contributions to the development of effective print- and web-based materials.

  • download multimedia material such as author photos, book cover art, press kits, sales sheets, podcasts, vidcasts, book trailers, writing or editing samples and more…
  • view your biography, along with links to any social or business networking profiles you may have at LinkedIn, Ryze, Facebook and other social networking sites
  • check out your own media room that links other sites relevant to you, your work or your books
  • subscribe through RSS feeds to content you post online
  • share any content of the site with friends or colleagues, via email or by posting to social bookmarking indexes like Newsvine, del.icio.us or Digg with one click
  • link directly to your latest blog posts
  • link to other blogs or websites that are relevant to your message

The market-intelligence firm IDC predicts that the social-networking application market will grow by 815% by 2009 as its uses evolve out of basic networking into marketing, branding, customer service and lead generation. The Facilitator

Marilyn Jones

Marilyn Jones brings more than 30 years of media relations, publishing and marketing experience to the workshop. She began to hone her media relations skills with the marketing and publicity for SummerFest, an umbrella arts organization that underwrote the start-up of a number of cultural events to mark Alberta's 75th birthday, including Edmonton's Folk Festival, Fringe Festival and Jazz Festival. Other highlights in her career include being manager of marketing and communications for the Citadel Theatre, a position she also held at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto.

Her latest interest is in exploring social media networks such as YouTube, Facebook, Newsvine and others to advise her clients how to incorporate social media into their promotion and communications activities. On January 1, 2008, along with volunteer webmasters from the Professional Writing Program at Grant MacEwan College, she set a Guinness World Record for the largest community blogging workshop in the world.

Marilyn is passionate about media, marketing, the arts, writing, publishing, photography and crafting effective communication strategies for small businesses, publishers and community organizations in Alberta.
