Maggie Morris

The Indie Editor

Guelph, ON
Experienced public speaker, available to talk to groups and associations about editors and editing.

I have over eight years of experience as a freelance fiction editor under the name The Indie Editor and have the pleasure of working with not only bestselling independent authors but also a large traditional publisher. I offer substantive editing, stylistic editing, copyediting, and proofreading. I have taught writing and revision seminars both in person and online for organizations such as Toronto Romance Writers, Ottawa Romance Writers, the Toronto Public Library, and the University of Guelph Writers Workshop. I have a BA in French and German language and literature from the University of Toronto and a Publishing Certificate from the former Ryerson University, now Toronto Metropolitan University. I volunteer for Editors Canada, and I am a co-chair of the Kitchener-Waterloo-Guelph Twig for the 2020–2022 term.

I enjoy excellent relationships with the authors I work with, and my business has grown largely by word of mouth. As you will see from the portfolio on my website, repeat clients make up most of my business. My philosophy as an editor is that it is as important to be kind and generous with praise as it is to critique. A writer myself, represented by Rena Rossner of The Deborah Harris Agency, I know how important this is to the creative spirit.
