I Help You Avoid Bad Reviews
Bad online reviews are the worst. They don't just talk about spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation, they talk about plot holes, inconsistent characters, loose ends, and factual errors. I can help clear those issues out of your work and preserve your voice.
Your protagonist must make your readers root for them. Your villain must be believable. Readers should be able to tell your characters apart in dialogue without your telling them who they are. Sometimes small changes can make all the difference. I can flag problems for you or fix them (Your call!). I point out information dumps, abrupt transitions, sections that don’t move the story along, characters who are similar enough to confuse the reader.
Further, if your work is a memoir, you need an editor who can help bring out your life story and avoid common pitfalls (then-this-happened-itis and potential defamation, for starters). I can help make your story the best that it can be and let the strengths of your work shine through.
I Make Your Work Clear for Peers and Laypeople
For those of you who write nonfiction, I can help increase the effectiveness of your hard work—whether you are a doctor, lawyer, or scientist. Even if your intended audience consists of subject matter experts, that audience can choose to read your writings or someone else’s. Part of their choice will turn on how much unnecessary effort they have to make to understand your ideas. You develop your ideas; I help you make them more presentable to your peers.
This challenge is greater when your audience is under time pressure or stress, or where they are laypeople. For example, perhaps a judge needs to understand your forensic reports, an opposing party needs to know the strength of your position for settlement purposes, or a patient needs to understand your handouts. It is important to you to preserve the meaning and intent of your manuscript, but it is important to your readers to be able to understand what you write. I can help you do both.
Unclear writing leaves a judge muttering, “Get to the point! Get to the point!” or, worse, “This doesn’t follow.” Parents who are reading your evaluations need to understand your findings and recommendations for their children. They are stressed and frightened, which makes comprehension more difficult. A family law client needs to understand their options. How can they assimilate your recommendations if they cannot understand them? These challenges are greater when you use dictation software. If you produce a very rough draft and leave the rest to me, it frees you up to move on to the next document. Let me help you be more efficient.
Clear Writing is a Civic Duty
Part of the reason for the spread of junk science and the mistrust of the courts is that professionals write for their peers when it is laypeople who will be reading their materials. I believe that effective communication is essential to maintain a civil society because it increases the likelihood that citizens will trust professionals. You can be part of the solution.
I have the education and technical writing experience to help you speak clearly to your chosen audience. I have a BA in comparative literature from the University of Virginia, a JD from William and Mary Law School, and an editing certificate from the University of California Berkeley Extension. I have published two book chapters, several technical articles, and academic articles in the fields of comparative literature, psychoanalytic anthropology, and social sciences in medicine (as second author).
I can give you a brief diagnostic of the strengths and weaknesses of your writing and how you can improve. Contact me for a sample edit and let me show you how I can help.
