EXPÉRIENCE
Jacquie is fluently bilingual with an Honours degree in translation. She has extensive experience writing, translating, adapting and editing a variety of texts, from marketing brochures to procedural manuals, scientific papers and children's literature. She specializes in editing English translations so they flow like originals.

Jacquie's article, "Editing in a bilingual country: dealing with winter tires, seeping syntax and faux amis," will be published in the February issue of Editing Matters, the journal of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders in the United Kingdom.

James is the senior medical editor at MediResource Inc., which provides web-based health information. He is one of the EAC's most respected authorities on English grammar and a publishing "triple threat": he writes, edits and does layout and design.

Publishing a great book sometimes feels like being in the operating room during a difficult birth. It takes a team. Who are the members of the editorial team? What do they do? What is considered an emergency? What is routine?

After 44 years as an author, editor, and project manager, Helen can story-tell her way through answers to these questions. Find out how school textbooks get published—and why. Learn about the path from idea to finished book, computer assessment CD, or online web site material. Consider how publishing has changed in the past 20 years—and where it may be going.

EXPÉRIENCE
After a brief career as an elementary school teacher, Helen balanced working as an elementary and high school supply-teacher with developing a career as a freelance journalist. During this period, she consulted with two school boards as an employment equity consultant, work that led to an interest in developing curriculum and getting her Master's of Science in Education. Helen uses the work on her master's—which included studying how people learn and the barriers to learning—as she edits and manages the development of social studies, language arts, science, and mathematics materials for students in grades 1 to 12.

Helen has spoken and presented at conferences for writers, editors, and teachers, as well as to elementary, high school, and college students. Parent and community groups have also been interested in her perspective.

Helen is a member of the Editors' Association of Canada, the Canadian Association of Children's Authors, Illustrators, and Performers, the Council of Canadians and the National Farmers Union. She is also a founding member of dameditors and a life member of the Outdoor Writers of Canada.

Adrienne's experience encompasses developmental, substantive and copy editing for a broad range of clients, including McGraw-Hill Ryerson, the Editors' Association of Canada, Pearson Education and Pronk & Associates. She specializes in science (predominantly chemistry), math, social sciences and first aid. In addition to instructing for the Parry Sound Community Access Network (see above), she has experience as a network administrator for WPSD Health Centre and as a curriculum correlation analyst for Nelson Education. Rosemary has vast experience in publishing education, teaching and public speaking. She was one of two founding coordinators for the Publishing Program at Ryerson University in Toronto, a position she held for 17 years. Gael has a special interest in plain language and has spoken on writing and editing at the 2009 EAC conference and at Mount Royal University in Calgary. She also leads discussions on plain language and editing with offices of the federal government.

EXPÉRIENCE
Gael Spivak is an English-language editor for the federal government. In 1988, she earned a Master of Arts degree in religious studies from the University of Calgary. She worked in bookstores for many years, maintaining her writing and editing skills through volunteer work.

Since moving to Ottawa in 2000, Gael has worked in government communications as both a contractor and an employee. She has written and edited documents on a range of topics, including animal health, biotechnology, ethics and government, food safety, pandemic influenza, plant health, police research and road salts. Gael developed, implemented and continues to lead a plain language project at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, where she specializes in plain language editing. She also coordinated speech writing for two-and-a-half years, working with senior government officials and a minister's office.

AUTRES INTÉRÊTS
Gael is an active member of the Editors' Association of Canada and serves on the executive of the NCR branch. She also does volunteer work with Not Just Tourists – Ottawa, a non-profit organization that helps travellers deliver medicine and medical supplies to countries in need.
